Resep obat penghilang rasa sakit dari dokter, juga bisa sebabkan kecanduan. Akibat kecanduan ini, setidaknya 10.000 orang tewas per tahun.

Mereka yang kehabisan obat biasanya akan berusaha memperoleh obat penghilang rasa sakit dengan cara apapun, hingga menggunakan heroin dan kokain.
