Pagelaran Academy Awards ke-81 yang menganugerahkan piala Oscar kepada puluhan insan film dunia ini berlangsung semarak, hari Minggu malam (22/2) waktu Los Angeles. Film "Slumdog Millionare", garapan sutradara Inggris, Danny Boyle menjadi bintang pada malam itu, menyabet 8 buah piala Oscar sekaligus untuk kategori-kategori utama, termasuk kategori film terbaik, sutradara terbaik dan skenario adaptasi terbaik.

Film Slumdog Millionare adalah sebuah film yang menceritakan kehidupan di kawasan kumuh kota Mumbai, India. Dimana sang pemeran utama larut dalam sebuah acara kuis memperebutkan hadiah jutaan Rupee. Kejayaan film ini di ajang Academy Awards menjadi kebanggan tersendiri bagi masyarakat India.

Pada pagelaran Academy Awards kali ini, gelar aktor utama terbaik diraih oleh Sean Penn lewat film "Milk". Aktris utama terbaik diraih oleh Kate Winslet, lewat "The Reader". Aktor pendukung terbaik diraih oleh Alm. Heath Ledger lewat aktingnya yang memukau pada film "The Dark Knight". Sedang gelar Aktris pendukung terbaik diberikan kepada Penelope Cruz lewat film "Vicky Cristina Barcelona".
